Prop scars become unique markings and ultimately are the easiest way to identify manatees, oddly if a manatee is rescued and goes into rehabilitation with no identifying marks it will be freeze branded with a number, in Florida. A collection was started in the late 1970s by scientists called the Manatee Photo Identification Database and now is the most extensive portrait ever compiled of any marine mammal species.
