Dr. James “Buddy” Powell is considered one of the pioneers in the field of modern manatee research, in Florida. He is from Crystal River and when he was a teenager fishing on the river, he met scientist Daniel Hartman, who noticed that Buddy had a nicer boat than he did and they ended up teaming up to identify manatees by their scars which was groundbreaking at the time. This led to the 1969 landmark piece in National Geo written by Hartman himself that attracted filmmaker Jacques Cousteau to the area to profile the "vanishing mermaids." Those two events spurred the public's interest in manatees, leading to their listing as one of the first endangered species in 1972. His story really shows how childhood involvement can lead to profoundly important careers related to the environment.
