Gold Beach is one of the 5 beaches on which the British troops landed in Normandy on 6 June 1944. The capture of Arromanches that same evening led to the arrival of troops by sea from England and the construction of the Artificial Port of Arromanches on 19 June 1944, which enabled troops and equipment to land for several months.
