Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting with British actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom in Kyiv on Sunday (26March2023).
The Pirates of the Caribbean star discussed the issue of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’s effect on children and in particular children who have gone missing from occupied areas of the country.
He also praised the “incredible stoic nature” of the Ukrainian people as well as their “determination and in their perseverance and resilience.”
“I met with the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom and the UNICEF team - an organization engaged in humanitarian support and protection of children… We discussed the issue of rebuilding our country, our school infrastructure. I appreciate this help. We agreed that our teams should work on several issues,” Zelensky added.
“The war is destroying the childhood of Ukrainian children,” he said in a statement. “Thousands of schools in Ukraine have been damaged or completely destroyed. Almost 2.7 million Ukrainian schoolchildren are forced to study online or in a mixed format. About 1.5 million Ukrainian boys and girls are at risk of developing depression, anxiety and other psychological problems.
“We all know what this aggression has brought and how full-scale the world's efforts must be to stop it, to rebuild Ukraine after the war.
“During the meeting, we discussed humanitarian aid projects, issues of reconstruction focused specifically on the interests of children. UNICEF and our teams will work in several directions, bring victory closer and return a happy childhood to Ukrainian children.”
Bloom told Zelensky at the end of their meeting: “Go win.”
