A life sized tiger.UK THESE INCREDIBLE images and accompanying film mark the accomplishments of a dedicated British artist who painted the world’s first life-sized elephant painting, taking over 500 hours, and leading to commissions from members of the Royal Family. Tembo the African elephant was orphaned at a young age near Kruger National Park in South Africa and hand reared. Despite attempts to relocate Tembo, he craved human interaction so could not be released into the wild. These incredible images were drawn by wildlife artist and photographer Richard Symonds (53) from Guildford, UK. Richard’s painting is his life-size drawing of Tembo the African elephant. To draw Tembo, Richard had to build a canvas in an aircraft hanger, that was 15 feet tall by 10 feet wide. To capture Tembo, Richard used over a litre of oil paints, most of which was completed on a step ladder. The painting took over 500 hours to complete. The painting of Tembo sold for $100,000, most of the money being donated to charities helping protect animals from poaching. After the sale of Tembo, Richard was contacted by a charity run by the late Mark Shand, brother of the Queen Consort, Camilla. Mark had rescued an Asian elephant called Tara and had nursed her back to health. Mark later rode Tara 600 miles across India, leading to his book “Travels on my Elephant”, before settling Tara at Kipling Camp where she still lives today. Richard was commissioned by Mark to create a life-sized painting of Tara. This painting became a star attraction at a fundraising event for Mark’s charity. It is believed that both Charles and Camilla have the painting of Tara in their collection following the untimely passing of Mark in 2015. Richard has also had limited edition prints and paintings hung by the Royal family, including a tiger which belongs to Prince Michael of Kent. Richard’s work is also owned by many celebrities including Chris Evans, Lesley Nicol, Desmond Tutu, Gary Lineker, Eric Clapton and many more. “Having been a wildlife artist for many years and privileged to have had numerous trips to Africa to photograph the wildlife for reference to paint and draw, there was always one animal that just left me in awe of its size and presence, and that’s the African elephant,” said Richard. “These huge graceful and biggest of the land-living animals always fascinated me on all my encounters with them over the years and so I had the idea to paint the world’s first life-sized elephant on canvas so that I could try to capture the true essence and scale of this enormous animal to all those who would see and stand close to the painting. “I had to build a canvas big enough to incorporate my elephant I called Tembo so set about creating a 15-foot by 10-foot canvas to fit him on which I built in a friend’s aircraft hangar. “I decided to paint him in oil paint as this offered the perfect medium for this size but most importantly I painted it in sepia as I wanted the painting to just be a tonal piece with no fuss or complication of colour to distract from the animal itself. “The painting took just over 500 hours to complete most of that on a step ladder and used over a litre of oil paint to create.” Richard talks about Tembo and why he chose to paint this elephant. “Tembo was sadly orphaned at a very young age near the Kruger National Park in South Africa and was hand-reared at a very early age,” he said. “When he was in his late teens they tried to relocate him back into the park so he could be wild and free again but sadly this was not possible as all Tembo craved was the interaction of humans again as that was what he had become used to. “I have learned over the many years of my time and presence amongst wildlife and the professionals that care for injured or orphaned animals that re-introducing wildlife back into the wild is an extremely complex and difficult situation and sadly rarely works. “I am still to this day extremely proud of my Tembo painting, firstly because it was the first life-sized elephant painting of its time but also because when I sold the painting for $100,000 I was able to donate a huge portion of this sale to Charity to help protect the African elephants in the wild from poaching and all sorts of other man related incidents. “It’s a truly wonderful feeling to ‘give back’ to the very animals you make your living from which I still do to this day.” Richard talks about his work with the Royal family and Mark Shand. “After the completion and sale of Tembo I was contacted by another charity run by the late and great Mark Shand, brother of Queen consort Camilla. mediadrumimages/RichardSymonds
