Opisthocomidae, Opisthocomus Hoazin at Yale University Peabody Museum. The hoatzin is a member of an ancient radiation of land birds. Uniquely among those of living birds, its hatchlings have dinosaur-like clawed hands instead of birds wings. They use these hands to clamber about in trees, much as non-avian dinosaurs once might have. "We study the transformation of the dinosaurian arm into the bird wing, and hoatzins present to us a "natural experiment" that involves the resurrection of a long-vanished mode of embryonic development (paralleling our lab-based experiment in which we resurrected ancestral dinosaurian snouts). We are planning to study this reversion using hoatzin embryos. " says Bhart-Anjan S. Bhullar assistant professor of Geology and geophysics, Yale University.

Unique en son genre parmi les oiseaux vivants, ses petits ont des mains aux griffes de dinosaure au lieu d'ailes d'oiseaux. Ils se servent de ces mains pour grimper dans les arbres, comme l'ont fait autrefois les dinosaures non aviaires. "Nous étudions la transformation du bras du dinosaure en aile d'oiseau, et les hoatzins nous présentent une "expérience naturelle" qui implique la résurrection d'un mode de développement embryonnaire depuis longtemps disparu (en parallèle avec notre expérience en laboratoire dans laquelle nous avons ressuscité les morses ancestraux). Nous prévoyons d'étudier cette réversion en utilisant des embryons hoatzin." explique Bhart-Anjan S. Bhullar, professeur adjoint de géologie et de géophysique à l'université de Yale.
