BLUE WHALE, Balaenoptera musculus.
Rescued from the brink of extinction in the 1960s, the blue whale is a symbol of hope for the future of the natural world.
Hunted for their meat, oil and baleen, numbers fell from around 350.000 to as few as 400 in the late twentieth century.
Since becoming a protected species, blue whale numbers have started to recover. Population estimates were up to 25,000 at the start of the twenty-first century. But threats such as marine pollution and climate change linger - the blue whale remains a vulnerable and endangered species.

Sauvée de l'extinction dans les années 1960, la baleine bleue est un symbole d'espoir pour l'avenir du monde naturel.
Chassée pour sa viande, son huile et ses fanons, son nombre est passé d'environ 350 000 à seulement 400 à la fin du XXe siècle.
Depuis qu'elle est devenue une espèce protégée, le nombre de baleines bleues a commencé à se rétablir. Les estimations de la population atteignaient jusqu'à 25 000 individus au début du XXIe siècle. Mais des menaces telles que la pollution marine et le changement climatique persistent - la baleine bleue reste une espèce vulnérable et menacée.
