Crystal Palace Park.
These ancient marine reptiles roamed the warm seas that once covered southern England, feeding on fish and relatives of squid and nautilus. They breathed air like mammals and gave birth to live young.
Unlike many of the Crystal Palace models these reconstructions were based on complete fossilised skeletons. However, any fleshy fins were not preserved in these specimens, leaving some uncertainty about how these animals might have looked.
In the foreground, ICHTHYOSAURUS: Ichthyosaurus (meaning ‘fish lizard’) had smooth skin like whales and vertical tails like sharks. Their giant eyes could be as large as dinner plates and may have helped them spy fish, shrimp and other food in deep, dark water.
In the background, PLESIOSAURUS: These seemingly sedate-looking reptiles were actually ferocious predators that used their paddle-shaped limbs to power through the ocean.

Ces anciens reptiles marins parcouraient les mers chaudes qui couvraient autrefois le sud de l'Angleterre, se nourrissant de poissons et d'ancń™tres des calmars et des nautiles. Leur mode respiratoire et de reproduction est comparable à celui des mammifères.
Contrairement à de nombreuses sculptures du Crystal Palace, ces reconstitutions sont basées sur des squelettes fossilisés complets. Cependant, les nageoires charnues n'ont pas été conservées jusqu'à nos jours, ce qui laisse une certaine incertitude quant à l'apparence de ces animaux.
Au pemier plan, ICHTHYOSAURUS : l'ichtyosaure (qui signifie "lézard poisson") avait une peau lisse comme les baleines et une queue verticale comme les requins. Leurs yeux géants pouvaient ń™tre aussi grands qu'une assiette et les aidaient peut-ń™tre à repérer les poissons, les crevettes et d'autres aliments dans les eaux profondes et sombres.
