Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 02/04/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - People walk through Juba's PoC 3 on April 2, 2017. The majority of the residents in the PoC sites fled the violence that erupted in December 2013. Thousands more sought shelter in the UN base when fighting resumed between government and opposition forces in July 2016.

Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 02/04/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - Women and girls in both PoC 1 Et 3 are forced to leave the sites temporarily to buy food items such as vegetables and fruits, either for their own consumption or to sell inside the camp to raise money. Many women are also forced to go outside to look for firewood, charcoal or other means to cook their food - a challenge that increases the risk of being sexually assaulted outside the perimeter of the PoC sites. When incidents of sexual violence occur, many women don't feel comfortable reporting the assaults to UNMISS and NGOs due to cultural barriers and feelings of shame. "It doesnt matter how old you are. If the soldiers want to rape you, they will do it", says a woman who lives in PoC 1.

Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 02/04/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - Many children around the camp are not going to school. "I have not been outside the camp since I arrived here in 2013. We don't have enough food and we want our children to be in school. I don't know what is going on in Juba. I don't know how long my family will stay here", says another resident.

Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 02/04/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - Civilians living in the UN House PoC 1 Et 3 are almost entirely members of the Nuer tribe who fear violence perpetrated by the government or by Dinka civilians. The outbreak of fighting caused many families to separate prior to or during displacement, resulting in a high proportion of single-headed households, both male and female.

Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 02/04/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - A lasting peace agreement and the end of the war are key factors for the IDPs in their decision to move from the PoC. "I don't want to stay in this camp. It is the situation in the country that made me stay here. When we came here we believed it was temporary. We never expected to stay this long", says a 24-year old man who has been living in PoC 3 since April 2014. "I am looking for peace and change in the country. Only peace can change our situation. One nation. One people. This is the wish of our community. If peace comes to South Sudan, I will go home to see my parents".

The cultural activities were opened at the end of 2014 to alleviate stress and to campaign for unity among the IDPs, and are highly appreciated in the camp. Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 02/04/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - The civil war and the atrocities that civilians were forced to witness have had significant repercussions on the IDPs' mental health. "People in the PoC are so traumatized. We lost our homes. Some people lost their entire family", says one resident in PoC 1. -The only thing we can do is to cry to the international community to force our leaders to bring a change in the country. Please bring a change to the government of South Sudan. Get us, IDPs living in the PoC, out of here-.

Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 02/04/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - The UN House is located in the outskirts of Juba and several IDPs describe horrific ordeals they had undergone to reach the PoC, as well as the continuous fear over external attacks on the site and the threats they might face if they tried to leave the camp. -If you leave the camp they know you and they can beat you, arrest you, or kill you. No one will come for you. They tell you it is safe to leave and then they kill you", says a young man who has lived in the PoC since 2013.

Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 30/03/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - Civilians in the PoC express a deep fear regarding their personal safety and the safety of their families. Despite the difficult conditions in the camp, the IDPs believe they face threats to their lives and could face persecution by SPLA soldiers who patrol the streets of Juba, if they leave the PoC.

Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 29/03/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - Providing protection for civilians at UNMISS bases should be a last resort and a temporary solution before more sustainable protection and assistance can be provided. However, political dimensions of South Sudan''s conflict and targeted violence against civilians on the basis of their tribal affiliation make the perspective of building durable solutions for the IDPs and their return to places of origin a distant prospect.

Natalia Jidovanu / Le Pictorium - Protection of Civilians site in Juba, South Sudan - 28/03/2017 - South Sudan / Juba - Sheltered under the watch of UN Peacekeepers and bordered by rows of rolled, barbed razor wire, some residents describe the PoC as an "open-air prison".
