COOL IDEA - CENTRAL COOLING FOR VIENNA HOTELS Visitors to Vienna are unlikely to worry too much about warm weather after the city invested in a 12 million GBP air-conditioner that pumps cold air through a network of pipes to many of the main hotels in the capital. The giant air-conditioning plant that has been built in an underground car park uses water from the nearby River Danube to cool the air. It means a massive saving in electricity costs and allows the central cooling plant to achieve the same result as would be reached by using 100,000 high-powered fridges. And a network of pipes have already been installed that will allow it to call not only dozens of hotels and guesthouses but also several companies and one of the university buildings in the capital. And the idea is not just hot air ??" it will mean a saving of around 1500 tonnes of carbon monoxide a year according to Vienna's deputy mayor Renate Brauner from the Social Democrats. She added that any buildings within a two-mile radius could be connected via the underground pipes to the giant cooling system that functions in the same way as centralised hot water and heating plants worked. City Hall services spokesman Marc Hall said that the device used about 50 percent less energy than was currently needed for the same amount of cooling. Further devices are planned. (ends)
