Glass slides with treated blood samples wait to be inspected for malaria parasites in the on-site laboratory as part of a Malaria eradication program run by the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit and as a result every patient with a fever has their blood tested for malaria. But in addition to dealing with the malaria program and other prevalent disease such as TB, this year the clinic was inundated with an epidemic of the mosquito-borne disease chikunguniya which also saw staff members becoming sick.
