Men and boys apply banco (a mixture of mud, rice hulls, and water) to one of the three minarets that tops the Great Mosque of Djenne in the early morning hours of April 15, 2018. Traditionally, men and boys are responsible for carrying banco to the mosque and applying it to the exterior, and women and girls responsible for carrying water from the nearby Bani River to large mud pits where the mud is mixed with rice hulls and water.
