PHOTO: EAST NEWS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY Orion and Altair spacecrafts. Computer artwork of the Orion crew module (lower right) docking to the Altair lunar lander, which is still attached to the Earth departure stage of the rocket launcher Ares V. These spacecrafts are part of NASA's Constellation Program, a US space program that was announced in 2004. The program is intended to launch in around 2014 and its mission is to put astronauts back on the Moon by 2020.

PHOTO: EAST NEWS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY Solar sail spacecraft, computer artwork. A solar sail spacecraft is a theoretical vessel that has a large, thin sail-like membrane for moving using sunlight. Pressure accumulates through the reflection of countless photons of light from the parent star. This gradually moves the spacecraft. The acceleration would be very low but continuous, eventually allowing very high speeds to be attained. This could be one way of travelling to the outer planets of the solar system.

PHOTO: EAST NEWS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY TRACE observatory and solar coronal loops, computer artwork. TRACE (Transition Region and Coronal Explorer) is a space observatory launched in 1998 to study the Sun at ultraviolet wavelengths. These coronal loops were observed by TRACE following a solar flare event in November 2000. The loops comprise electrically charged gases (plasma) at millions of degrees Celsius, thousands of times hotter than the Sun's surface. Gas is heated as it is ejected from the surface and follows the path of magnetic field lines before crashing back down on the Sun's surface at over 100 kilometres per second.

PHOTO: EAST NEWS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY Alien planets and space warp, computer artwork. Several extrasolar planets and moons are seen here, against a background of stars. Three planets or moons are at upper right, and one is at bottom. At left is a spinning vortex of coloured light, which can represent concepts such a space warp. This is a warping of space-time, and is a concept found in science-fiction stories where they are used to travel to distant parts of the universe.
