Jan 01, 1950; Princeton, New Jersey, USA; A Jewish, German-born theoretical physicist ALBERT EINSTEIN who's widely regarded as the most important scientist of the 20th century and one of the greatest physicists of all time, produced much of his remarkable work during his stay at the Patent Office and in his spare time. He played a leading role in formulating the special and general theories of relativity; moreover, he made significant contributions to quantum theory and statistical mechanics. While best known for the Theory of Relativity (and specifically mass-energy equivalence, E=mc?), he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905 (his 'wonderful year' or 'miraculous year') and 'for his services to Theoretical Physics.' Dr. Albert Einstein writes out an equation for the density of the Milky Way on the blackboard at the Carnegie Institute, Mt. Wilson Observatory headquarters in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 14, 1931. Einstein achieved world reknown in 1905, at age 26, when he expounded his Special Theory of Relativity which proposed the existence of atomic energy. Though his concepts ushered in the atomic age, he was a pacifist who warned against the arms race. Einstein, who radically changed mankind's vision of the universe, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. (AP Photo)

Artist Alexi Torres uses a style which imitates the interweaving of strands to build up recognisable images of famous people and icons. His mind-bending works include representations of John Lennon, Muhammad Ali and Andy Warhol. Alexi has also painted the American flag, with objects, icons, symbols, and businesses that represent the culture of the nation. The Cuban-born artist can work on up to five canvases at the same time, with each one taking approximately 6 to 8 weeks to complete. He paints 7 days a week, from 6 to 10 hours a day.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by REX/Jane Perkins (3152213f) Albert Einstein This Art Is Rubbish: Junk Portraits by Jane Perkins This artist will not mind her work being called rubbish; Jane Perkins creates amazing portraits from used items people are throwing away or that she finds at car boot sales. The 55-year-old from Devon painstakingly builds up likenesses of famous faces and reproduces iconic artworks from things like buttons, pieces of cheap jewellery and old toys. Her work includes uncanny pictures of Usain Bolt, Sir Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein, as well as tributes to the royals Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and the Queen. There are also homages to classic artworks including Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. Jane took up art after a career in nursing and as a stay-at-home mother. She decided to take a degree in textiles as a mature student, and managed to gain a First. She explains "In my final degree year, I made brooches from small toys and broken jewellery, moving on to larger works with a portrait of The Queen. The idea of Plastic Classics followed, reinterpreting famous works of Art using found materials, giving them a contemporary twist. One example is Sunflowers by Van Gogh. The 3D nature of Van Gogh's thickly applied paint which he squirted straight from the tube, lends itself perfectly to re-interpretation using found materials. "I love art with an element of fun and the unexpected. I use random small objects: plastic toys, shells, beads, buttons etc. No colour is added to any of the materials - they are exactly 'as found'. My work needs to be viewed in two ways: from a distance, to recognise the whole image, and close up, to identify the materials. "I love car boot sales. I take GBP 20 and scour the tables for small toys and jewellery, especially looking for colours I need. When the GBP 20 is spent, I come home. "All sorts o...
