Tobacco is seeded in autumn and early winter and harvested in the spring before the summer heat when plants reach a height of around one metre. Vinales valley, Cuba The rolling tale of Cuban cigars, Cuba - Dec 2015 FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/ryoi A photographer has captured a series of images telling the tale of Cuban cigars; from the tobacco growing in the fields to the people rolling the cigars. Cuba has the second largest area planted with tobacco worldwide. The centre of Cuban tobacco production is the Pinar del R?o Province, in the West of the island. The two main varieties of tobacco grown in Cuba are Corojo, used for wrappers because of the large shaped leaves, and Criollo. Cuba has the perfect environment for growing tobacco for cigars. The soil allows the plants to produce high quality leaves. The leaves used for the wrappers, considered the most important part of the cigar, attain an exceptionally perfect form in Cuba. The weather is also key, the subtropical humid climate is ideal for both the growing and the drying of the plants.
