Sofia has gone from being bald to hair over 40-inches. SOFIA, BULGARIA: THIS WOMAN has grown her hair to over 40-inches from being bald and has even had creepy men approach her to buy her hair for up to Ł120. Archaeologist and Tech Support Sofia K Black (31) from Sofia, Bulgaria who recently moved back to Bulgaria after ten-years in Edinburgh, Scotland has spent ten years growing her hair from being completely bald to having 44-inch long hair which she intends to cut one day in order to donate money she can raise towards a cancer charity – rather than selling it to the higher bidder. Sofia used to shave her hair quite frequently so that she was completely bald. but stopped in 2013 because her hair grew so quickly that she would have to shave daily to maintain the hairstyle she desired. After the first time she shaved her head, someone had mentioned that she should have donated the hair to a cancer charity, which Sofia had no knowledge of as she was new to the UK at the time. So after hearing of this, she vowed to grow her hair as long as she could and once the day came where she would cut it, she would donate it all to a cancer charity. But ten years on, Sofia is still strong in growing her hair, to where it is at its longest at 44-inches presently. Sofia loves her long hair and enjoys finding different ways to style it. Sofia has also gotten many compliments online and in person on her hair, even mentioning how many people have passed her and exclaimed “wow!” when they see how long and thick her hair is. Many people have even approached her in the street and asked if she had extensions in as they couldn’t believe that her hair was natural. However, not all interactions have been straight-forward and positive as Sofia remembers an encounter she had with a mysterious stranger who approached her and asked if she would “sell her hair” to him as he was “in the hair buying business”. After handing Sofia a business card, Sofia politely declined and told the stranger that she was waiting to cut her hair for charity, not to sell it. Sofia was flabbergasted by the stranger as he tried to convince her to sell her hair to him, rather than give it to charity. “One time I was approached by someone on the street who wanted to buy my hair”, she said. “I was helping my sister with organising her new exhibition, and I had my hair down, and suddenly this guy appeared and handed me his business card. “He explained to me that he was in the ‘business of buying hair’ and told me to call him when I decided to cut my hair and he would ‘give me a good price’. “I thanked him for the offer but told him what I was saving my hair for and we got into an argument about hair donation versus selling hair for profit.” Despite this approach by the creepy man, Sofia has had mostly overwhelmingly positive responses to her hair, which she appreciates, especially her niece who says she looks like a princess because of her hair. “My favourite reaction is from my niece who always says I look like a princess when my hair is down, and she aspires to have hair like mine one day,” she said. “Most little girls tend to have this reaction. “The most common question I get is ‘How do you maintain it? It must take forever’, which to me is very entertaining because having long hair for me is so much easier to maintain than having short hair, as that takes so much effort to style, while with my hair - I just brush it and then put it up in a loose bun and it’s good to go. “Usually people notice with a big audible awe but I must admit I don't really notice how long my hair has gotten until someone mentions it. “I often get asked if I got extensions.” After having her hair shaved down to her head, Sofia is planning on growing it as long as she possibly can now. “It used to be all the way down to the skin as I used to shave my head only at barbershops,” she said. “This is the longest I have had it so far, 40 inches. “I stopped shaving it at the end of 2013 as my hair grows quite fast which meant that if I wanted to keep it at a double zero, I had to practically shave daily. “I cut it every-now-and-then but only when I see split ends, maybe once a year?” Once Sofia has grown her hair as long as she can, she plans on donating it all to charity. “I plan on growing it for as long as I can at the moment, and then donate it,” she said. “Back in 2013 my hair was just below my shoulders and after I shaved it everyone asked me if I had shaved for charity. “At the time I was still a new resident to the UK so I had no idea that that option even existed - we didn't have anything like that in Bulgaria, and my heart sank. mediadrumimages/Sofia Black
