Once classified as morbidly obese, a Rhode Island woman who tipped the scale at 256 lbs (116 kg) has shed a jaw-dropping 130 lbs (59 kg) and transformed into a living embodiment of weight loss success. Amanda Bucci's struggles with weight began in her childhood. While she thought she had it under control in her early 20s - having lost 80 lbs (36kg) - she started to slowly gain weight after getting married at age 24, indulging in her love for carb comfort foods. After losing her unborn baby mid-pregnancy, Amanda turned to food to cope with the devastating emotional pain she was experiencing, packing on 60 lbs (27 kg) in just six months. "My husband and I both have a rare blood disorder called beta thalassemia, and our first pregnancy was 'high risk'. After having our daughter Annabelle and finding out she was healthy, we entered our second pregnancy with high hopes for a similar outcome. Sadly, we decided to terminate after the beta thalassemia was diagnosed. We could have gone the full term, but the disease causes the need for constant blood transfusions, bone malformations, organ failure and shortened life expectancies," Amanda shared. "I turned to food as an emotional crutch – and my weight spiraled out of control. I packed on 60 lbs (27 kg) in six months, leaving me even more depressed and deeply self-conscious." It wasn't until the birth of her second child Vivienne in May 2018 that Amanda decided enough was enough. She started implementing small lifestyle changes during her maternity leave, such as walking and healthier eating habits and lost 130 lbs (59 kg). "After giving birth to my daughter, I experienced a powerful motivation to make positive changes in my life. One of the most important changes I made was to focus on losing weight and improving my health, not only for myself but also for the benefit of my family," she said. "This newfound determination allowed me to become a more engaged and active parent, able to fully participate in the joys and challenges of being a mum. As I shed excess pounds and gained confidence in my physical abilities, I found that I could better keep up with my kids and be the best parent I could be." Amanda explained her weight loss journey started with 'baby steps' and progressed to 65 minutes of cardio seven times a week and five days a week of heavy weight training, combined with a low-carb diet. She shares her workout and progress to her 140K followers on her Instagram page. "Working out became a part of my daily routine. I started to look forward to it every day, and it made me feel good. What started as a way to lose weight turned into a lifestyle of being healthy and strong," she explained. Following her weight loss, Amanda was left with excess skin on her lower stomach. She decided to have it removed with an abdominoplasty. "I knew abdominoplasty was a major surgery that involved risks and potential complications but thought if I had the right plastic surgeon, the operations would be successful. Unfortunately, in my case, there were a lot of complications due to the anaesthesia, and I spent 10 days in hospital," Amanda admitted. "It was a tough recovery. Right after the surgery was done, I felt a lot of regret, but now that I'm physically healthy again, I'm glad I did something for myself. I feel confident in the skin I'm in. I feel 100 percent like myself." When: 31 May 2023 Credit: @lifeinleopardpumps/Cover Images **EDITORIAL USE ONLY. MATERIALS ONLY TO BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH EDITORIAL STORY.
