They bought the house for just under L365,000. CAMBRIDGE, UNITED KINGDOM: THIS FAMILY has spent just five-thousand-pounds transforming their boring new build home into a classy and modern dwelling - raising the value of the property by over TWENTY-FIVE-THOUSAND-POUNDS. Pharmaceutical associate Charley Atherton (31) from Cambridge, UK, purchased her first home when she was just 21-years-old. As the property needed some modernisation, she set about learning the necessary DIY skills needed to help transform her home, which is where her love for DIY began. In August 2018, she and her partner George (27) purchased their four-bedroom, detached home for just under L365,000. Despite the property being a new build, the two wanted to make the space their own so set about transforming their home. The duo?s most expensive project was the living room as it cost L1,300 alone for a bespoke media wall to be built and an additional L350 for lighting. Charley wanted to have her television as the focal point of the room whilst allowing space on either side for decoration and storage. She set about gathering wooden planks, sanded them all down, painted them in two coats of primer (L20) and three coats of a durable top coat (L30). Once this was complete, a carpenter fixed all the components together which created a wall that was classy and fresh, whilst practical. Charley and George have a little boy together, Jack (2) and they wanted to create a fun space that was just for him. Luckily, they had an unused dining room and decided to transform the space into a playroom. Charley started by clearing the room and painting a simple, yet colourful design on the back wall of a mountain with a rising sun. She purchased tester pots from Dulux (L17) and painted the mural by hand. She then added soft foam flooring (L80) and tonnes of storage such as hidden baskets and integrated cabinets from Ikea.
