Despite the star-studded guest list, spectacular performances, eye-catching outfits and all the usual glamour and razzmatazz of the annual MTV Video Music Awards, one man stole the show - for all the wrong reasons.
Rapper Kanye West walked onto the stage during 19-year-old singer Taylor Swift's speech after she accepted her award for Best Female Video and proceeded to grab the microphone to tell her, the audience and millions of viewers around the world that the prize should have gone to Beyonce Knowles.
West had earlier been seen on the red carpet accompanied by his model girlfriend Amber Rose and a half-empty bottle of Hennessy Cognac - and was later ejected by event organisers after he was booed by the audience for ruining Swift's big night.
Beyonce herself was so mortified by his behaviour that, after she won her own award for Best Video, she invited young Swift back on stage to share the applause.
West's rant - an apparently favourite pastime of the performer who once stormed the stage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards to moan about being overlooked for the Best Video award - overshadowed some amazing costumes and performances from the likes of Lady GaGa, Pink and Beyonce herself.
Madonna and Janet Jackson opened the show with a tribute to the late King Of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Other guests, winners and performers at the event included Katy Perry, Akon, Alexa Chung, Alicia Keys, Green Day, Amerie, Cassie, Buzz Aldrin, Chace Crawford, Gerard Butler, Jack Black, Jennifer Lopez, Joe Jackson, Nelly Furtado and Russell Brand.
