Cute baby zebra shark NETHERLANDS PROVING that absence really does make the heart grow stronger, these rare sharks were only bred after keepers made them spend months apart. Almost on the verge of EXTINCTION, zebra sharks have now been successfully bred at the Royal Burgers' Zoo in the Netherlands. Burgers' Zoo's Ocean is an eight-million-litre tropical coral reef aquarium and houses three zebra sharks (Stegostoma fasciatum). These species are part of a European population management programme (EEP, European Ex-situ Programme), which ensures the creation of a backup or revival of those species in zoos or monitored spaces that are on the brink of extinction in the wild. The three sharks have been living together at the zoo for years but never reproduced. To encourage that, the males were regularly separated from the females for short periods of time to see if that would boost the reproductive mood. That seemed to have worked when the overjoyed zookeepers found their eggs with yolks. These sharks proved that distance does make the heart grow fonder. According to Burgers' Zoo, “At a water temperature of 25 degrees, a pup will hatch after 135 to 176 days, provided the embryo does not die prematurely. To maximise the odds of success, the eggs were quarantined behind the scenes. “The quarantine also prevented other shark species from eating the eggs. “Each month, the Ocean team inspected the egg by holding a lamp behind it to monitor the embryo's development and condition. “The pup has now hatched and is shaped like a miniature of its parents but has a black and white striped pattern in its first years of life. This is where the name zebra shark came from.” ENDs
