(NYT18) NEW YORK -- October 31, 2003 -- MERRILL-ONEAL -- Last June, the chief executive of Merrill Lynch, E. Stanley O'Neal, became a director at the New York Stock Exchange. So it is perhaps not surprising that he would keep his distance a few months later as his peers at the big Wall Street firms teamed up to force the resignation of its chairman, Richard A. Grasso. O'Neal in the 4 World Trade Center offices overlooking the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty in lower Mahanttan on Oct. 28, 2003. (Vincent Laforet/The New York Times)
