(NYT27) NEW YORK -- October 30, 2003 -- NY-SARS-SCHOOL -- A year ago, the Greene Laboratory of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in Manhattan did not exist; today, the stuff of nightmares and headlines resides there - SARS, West Nile virus, Bornavirus, anthrax. With remarkable speed, the lab has helped turn Mailman into a major player in research on the infectious disease outbreaks and bioterror threats that have been the focus of the world's attention in the last few years. Gustavo Palcios, wearing protective gear and taking in filtered air to avoid germs, worked with cells infected with the SARS virus at Mailman on Oct. 14, 2003. (Marilynn K. Yee/The New York Times)
