There was gentle shoving, headbutting, lots of pushing and jostling as their trunks entwined and tusks clashed. On this occasion, it was no different, after quashing their thirst, the matriarch’s led them off. However, two of the younger bulls seemed excitable, a sparring session was agreed between them with the raising of trunks. Let battle commence. ‘Wide boy’ as I nicknamed him because of his very wide tusks, confronted the smaller bull ‘Pretty boy’, pushing them around, having the upper ground, the younger bull was forced backwards at some pace as the older, bigger and more dominant bull pushed them towards our vehicle, at which point we needed to get out of their way! The sparring session continued, notice one of the sisters in the background keeping an eye on things, so that it does not become too much. Slowly they repositioned themselves so that they were facing each other side – perfect viewing for us. These match ups allow the youngsters to test their fighting ability before reaching sexual maturity at the age of 25 when they enter hormonal state of musth. They broke for another short rest before heading into the bush for more battling, the smaller bull seemed to get the upper hand this time, landing some decent strikes with his perfectly formed tusks, eventually leading to the ‘Wide boy’ running off to join the rest of the herd after the tusks struck him in the head and in the mouth. After 8 minutes of action, ‘Pretty boy’ seemed quite chuffed with themselves at the end.
