TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY Lucie PEYTERMANN
Founder of the Senegal Association of Victims of Irregular Migration (COVES) Aminata Boye (R) speaks with Ndey Ndiaye at her home in Mbour, on March 10, 2026. Ndey is raising her two grandsons after loosing her daughter when the pirogue she was travelling in capsized trying to reach Europe through the Atlantic route.
For children of Senegalese migrants lost at sea, the torment of grief is long-lasting.
Known as "those who remain", the young bereaved are forced to live with the unbearable suspense or impossible grief of knowing a parent has either died or gone missing after their boat disappeared.
The number of such dead, missing and their children is at least in the thousands in Senegal as of recent years. (Photo by PATRICK MEINHARDT / AFP)
