An Ohio man who lost 400lbs after a doctor warned he was eating himself into an early grave is hoping to have skin removal surgery. At a staggering 700 lbs, Zachary Muncy, who has 13M likes on TikTok, was confined to a wheelchair due to his excessive weight. Determined to reclaim his health, Zachary, 27, embarked on an incredible journey, losing half his body weight in just 15 months – without undergoing weight loss surgery. "I've struggled with weight my entire life. By the time I reached ninth grade, I was already tipping the scales at 280 lbs," shared Zachary. "My weight struggles got even more out of control after high school. By senior year, I had ballooned up to 400 lbs. I couldn't stop binge-eating fast food, like McDonald's and Domino's Pizza. I used to polish off an entire bag of crisps and a whole sleeve of cookies in minutes. It's crazy to think, but I easily took in 5,000 to 8,000 calories a day. It got so bad that I couldn't even move without pain and could hardly breathe. I ended up in a wheelchair." Zachary admitted he would probably have eaten himself to death had he not got a wake-up call in July 2019. "At the time, I was 20 years old. I was in a very dark place - unhappy and battling depression. My doctor told me that if I didn't do something about my weight, I would probably not live to see my 25th birthday. That scared me straight. I decided enough was enough." Muncy's initial attempt at weight loss involved liquid-only diets, but he quickly realised they weren't sustainable due to uncontrollable cravings. "I knew the only thing that would work for me was adopting a structured calorie-restricted diet and incorporating regular exercise into my lifestyle. However, even short bursts of exercise were nearly impossible at my size," he added. Muncy started making small, attainable goals and taking things one day at a time. "I started by limiting my portions while still enjoying my favourite foods. If I wanted pizza, I had pizza; I just got a small one instead of an extra large one for myself." When it came to exercising, Zachary began by incorporating exercises while seated on the edge of his bed. Building upon this initial progress, Muncy elaborated, "I started researching nutrition via online resources before taking the initiative to develop my own nutrition plan and compile grocery lists, complete with calorie targets. With the support of my family and friends, I started preparing nutritious meals." These initial strides paid off. Within the first four months, Zachary had shed over 70 lbs and experienced a profound improvement in his health. "Before my weight loss journey, I led a completely sedentary lifestyle. When I wasn't being pushed around in a wheelchair, I struggled to walk more than a few steps without feeling like I was going to have a heart attack. Today, I'm proud to say that I walk about 8 kilometres six times a week as part of my cardio workout routine. I take Thursdays as my rest days. I engage in weightlifting sessions on Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays. Surprisingly, I've never worked with a personal trainer." By combining his revamped diet and exercise routine, Zachary lost 365 lbs - over half his original weight. Detailing his current dietary approach, he explained, "I maintain a structured calorie-restricted diet. I aim for 2,000 calories daily, keep sodium intake below 2,000 milligrams, and prioritise at least 140 grams of protein. My morning routine is simple and consistent. I start with a fruit smoothie containing spinach and a protein shake. Lunch options include BBQ chicken with potatoes, chicken Alfredo made with whole wheat noodles, hearty salads, and egg-based dishes. Dinner changes, but mostly, it's a very small meal." Zachary explained that his life has changed in every aspect since losing weight. "My life has more potential, more joy, and it's easier to exist. I have a long road ahead of me to accomplish my goals, but I'm very excited. My transformation blows away my friends and family, and some don't even recognise me. They're all very proud of what I've achieved. I don't recognise myself in the mirror - and sometimes I suffer body dysmorphia and picture myself as still being overweight - but I'm learning to love myself. I've had no surgeries as of yet but am hoping to have skin removal surgery." Zachary's girlfriend, Brianna Rowe, recently launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for his skin removal surgery. In her heartfelt plea, Brianna explained the physical and mental challenges Zachary faces due to excess skin on his chest, arms, and back, causing discomfort, rashes, chafing, and emotional distress. The surgery required is not covered by insurance, as it is deemed cosmetic rather than medically necessary. "I've fought hard to regain my health and life while also trying to motivate others along the way. I just want to be comfortable in my own skin," concluded Zachary.
