On estancias across Patagonia most workers, from cooks to cowboys, are men. Very few women live or work on the ranches as the accommodations and lifestyle of working in isolated outposts, or "puestos," mostly cater to men. However, on this weekend wives and sisters of a family with an estancia near Puerto Natales visit to help take part in the annual branding activities. Both men and women take a morning break to drink mate, a traditional green tea drank out of a gourd with a metal straw, while chatting in the ranch kitchen.
