She has been in unbearable pain ever since she was eight. THIS WOMAN has revealed how, thanks to bugling medics, she suffered TWENTY-FIVE kidney infections, which turned into septic shock that nearly killed her. Health advocate and entrepreneur Christina Paruag (28), from Toronto, Canada, was dismissed by doctors most of her life despite suffering from unbearable pains since she was eight. Her symptoms started with severe chest pains and abdominal pain when she was eight. She was taken to the ER screaming in pain while the doctors told her parents that they were just ‘growing pains’. By the age of ten, she was taking powerful painkillers Advil and Tylenol, and by the time she was 18 years old in university, she was on high doses of Morphine and Oxycodone. For years, Christina suffered from chronic pains and, without a diagnosis, relied on heavy painkillers. She lost so much weight due to her condition that she ended up at less than 100 pounds while standing five feet and eleven inches tall. Yet the doctors kept telling her to take more pills and antibiotics. “The doctors couldn’t determine what was wrong with me, so they would just give me medication to manage the pain and give some arbitrary diagnosis like ‘growing’ pains’, which made no sense,” she said. “When I was 11, I went to my family doctor with stomach pains, and he sent me for an X-ray and told me I had a hairline fracture in the hip without me falling or having an accident to cause that. “After three weeks of missing school to recover they told us that it was a misdiagnosis and they do not know actually what they saw in the x-ray. “I was 16 when someone understood that what I had was endometriosis - in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, but they still could only give me pain meds to deal with it. “I had an ovarian cyst the size of a grapefruit that ruptured and infected my kidneys. “I had more than twenty-five kidney infections and was in mind-numbing pain for three weeks in a month dealing with severe endometriosis, ruptured ovarian cysts, kidney infections, and lung collapses, sometimes all at the same time. “The multiple infections one day sent me into a septic shock while I was at the hospital for stomach pain. “I was close to dying that day, and the doctors said that if I did not make it through the night, I wouldn’t make it at all. “It nearly broke my parents, and all they could do was stay by my side and cry. My organs were failing, but the doctors kept checking up on me and giving me medications to hopefully control the situation. “I was so much in pain and so heavily medicated that I cannot recall most of that night, but I remember the next day when I pulled through, the relief on everyone’s faces, my family and the doctors was huge. “When I realised that no one was going to help me deal with this, I started searching for help through online support groups and found a Facebook group, Nancy’s Nook, for people suffering from endometriosis. “There, I learned about a doctor in the UK, Dr. Peter Barton Smith, who had previously helped a patient with similar issues. “In 2020, I reached out to him, and we scheduled a meeting. Even though Covid had hit, I went to the UK and discussed my case with him and finally got an accurate diagnosis.
