Baby Alyssa after the accident OHIO DESPITE being called a “monster” after a childhood fire left her with one eye, this single mum is battling her haters so no one like her needs to suffer online bullying. Burned as a toddler while playing unsupervised in her grandmother’s kitchen, trainee nurse Alyssa Marie McDonald (32), from Cincinnati, Ohio, cares for her seven-year-old daughter, Alijah or Aj, while juggling a full-time healthcare job, studying part-time, and being a social media content creator. She balances life between motherhood and social media content creation while training as an assistant nurse and working full-time in the healthcare industry, taking care of adults with learning disabilities. Alyssa was just two years old when she suffered severe burns that left her in a coma with her head swelled up to three times its normal size, temporarily blind with distraught teenage parents traumatised by the devastating incident. However, because she was so young, Alyssa has no memory of what happened to her, and she only knows what she was told by her maternal grandmother while growing up. She was told she was at her maternal grandmother’s house in Decatur, Illinois, on Memorial Day, 27 May 1993. There, she was left unsupervised for a while, during which time she reached for a hot pot of melted butter on a stove and pulled it down on herself. The pot fell on her face and burned her; she lost her left eye. After the alarm was raised, little Alyssa was rushed to hospital, but because of the accident, she was in a coma for a week. She had to live in the hospital for the next few months and has had over 100 surgeries. To this day, she has scars on her back, shoulders, scalp, and buttocks. In total, 60% of her body suffered from severe burns. However, her parents, who were teenagers then, are still unsure if these events are true because the family’s fraternal grandmother does not trust the version of events the maternal grandmother recounted to everyone else in the family. Alyssa does not know if she will ever know the whole story of her accident. “Although I do not remember the incident, I do know that I spent a short time In a coma, and my head swelled three times its size so that I couldn’t lift it up,” she said. “The doctors also believed that I was blind until I started reacting to light again. “I’ve had more surgeries than you can count. Skin grafts, plastic surgery and reconstruction surgery. “I stopped having them when I turned 18 and was able to make my own medical decisions. I decided I had spent enough time under the knife and in the hospital. So, I haven’t had any treatments since. “I was bullied as a child, but I never let the thoughts or words of others affect how I felt about myself.” From New York to Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, Alyssa spent most of her early adulthood travelling to as many places as possible. Before becoming a mother, she did not stay in one place for too long. It was during one of these trips to Cincinnati, Ohio, that she met the father of her daughter. “Having Aj truly changed my objective in life and gave me a reason to explore my purpose here. Before having her, I was perfectly content with floating through life as I was,” she said. “Being the sole provider for another human being changed my perspective, and I wanted to have a concrete foundation for me and my child to stand on. “Joining the healthcare industry happened by chance. I started out in the kitchen. I became so attentive to the residents that I was moved into the healthcare side, that was five years ago.” Although she loves her job as a healthcare worker, this is not where her life calling lies. “My passion is in telling my story to people and inspiring anyone who needs it,” she said. “As I became more prevalent on social media, people became interested in exactly how I received my scars. So, instead of giving each person an explanation, I decided to make a video. “One day, I took my laptop to the bathroom with the most light and told my story. The rest is history. “I've been featured in Ebony's online website, out-trended Obama that day, made countless viral videos which caught the eye of our neighbours across the pond.” Alyssa became interested in beauty content on social media around 2012 and started posting fashion and beauty-related content on Instagram, where she has attracted 2,186 followers. “When I post my content, it’s for people who may look like me or suffer from something that would otherwise be looked down upon, the people who do fit the traditional beauty standards. So they can see that it’s possible to feel beautiful and sexy with whatever body you were blessed with,” she said.
