A Northern Ireland woman is turning tragedy into impact by supporting other women after her sister died in tragic circumstances.
Jennifer Cairns, 51, from Lisburn, lost her sister Francesca last year at the age of 27 following an accidental overdose. Francesca, known as Franki to friends, was a photographer, artist and poet living in New York, but she suffered from bipolar disorder and struggled with anxiety.
Jennifer says: ‘We both self-medicated in our late teens/early 20s with alcohol, however, she also struggled so much with her meds and went through some very bad spells. She took a slightly darker turn than I did - but I could have easily ended up where she is now.
‘Franki was a creative spirit - loved and was very good at poetry, painting, piano and music, photography.’
Francesca was addicted to heroin and fentanyl but was attempting to get clean at rehab in Mexico. However, she must have left the facility, had a relapse and overdosed last year, Jennifer believes.
Jennifer says: 'Fentanyl is a horrid thing and not only so addictive but easy to OD on, especially for those who've tried to get clean. It was very sad as she was so much wanted to be free of it all and not be in so much pain all the time. That's the only comfort any of us take from it is the fact she isn't struggling or in pain any longer.
Jennifer runs Lady Rebel Club, an organisation designed to make opportunities for women and other marginalised gender entrepreneurs, small business owners, creators and leaders who are neurodivergent or disabled.
She has now set up Franki’s fund in her sister’s honour, which will give divergent women more opportunities and help them realise that people see them and believe in them, and is this month opening up a black and white photo competition to commemorate her.
Jennifer adds: ‘That's priceless. And she will get the legacy I wanted her to have while alive and her work will be seen by millions.’
