A first pressing vinyl of the Beatles’ album ‘Please Please Me’ from 1963 has sold for £4,211.89 after being spotted in a charity shop. Jaime-Marie Madden, shop manager of the Cancer Research shop in Enfield, London, spotted what she thought was a valuable Beatles vinyl worth a few hundred pounds. After listing the record on Cancer Research UK’s eBay marketplace, it raised almost £4,211.89 for life-saving cancer research. Madden said: “The record was in good condition, with only a few marks, but the sleeve was pretty damaged and worn – with a cut at the base, some scuffs, marks, ageing and stains. There was even a name written on the back. “Luckily, at Cancer Research UK we’re trained to spot donations that can raise more money for life-saving cancer research, so after taking a few pictures and googling the record, I knew we had something special,” she added. Madden couldn’t believe how much the vinyl sold for but explained how: “We’re always grateful to people who donate to the charity, and we always try to make the most of donations.” The record was donated to the charity shop in good condition and Madden was able to identify the record as a higher-value item better suited for the charity’s online marketplace. The incredible find was processed by the dedicated online trading team and listed on eBay, with a starting price of £1,499.99. The auction ran for five days and ended with a winning bid of £4,211.89. Harper Field Auctioneers and Valuers vinyl record valuation specialist Mike Kuklenko said: “What an amazing story! ‘Please Please Me’ by The Beatles, in this format is an incredibly rare record, and a great spot by Marie. I’ve seen a few stories like this in my time as a professional vinyl valuer. Kuklenko explained that old collections going to auction are not a rarity. However, he has been “fortunate enough to be the one who surprises them that they have a gem or two worth hundreds or even thousands of pounds.” Cancer Research UK, like many other charities, has its own online shop which sells its new products. It also has marketplaces across, eBay, ASOS and Depop, that list between 3,500-4,000 items per week. When: 19 Mar 2024 Credit: Cancer Research UK/Cover Images **EDITORIAL USE ONLY.
