Cutest penguin chicks posing for a census count SOUTH AFRICA THESE CUTEST penguin chicks looked like fluffy children's toys as they adorably waddled up to be counted by researchers on the coastline of Marion Island in South Africa. The seven-week-old penguins look like they are smiling and posing for the scientific research team in what has to be one of the most heart-melting sights to witness. The adorable Eastern Rockhopper penguin chicks belong to a colony on Marion Island known as the Toffee Lava Colony, where thousands of rockhopper penguins nest in the fissures of a black lava flow. Michelle Risi (33) a seabird field researcher and a wildlife photographer from South Africa captured these tiny chicks from a distance of just six-feet. “These chicks were not disturbed or scared by my presence there and I was able to move in close to take their pictures,” she said. “When approaching them, we need to move slowly and carefully so they don’t get spooked by our presence. “Most seabirds on sub-Antarctic islands are quite unafraid as they do not know what humans are. “I was performing a whole island survey. “Therefore, to count them, we visited all of the penguin colonies on Marion and came across these charming little penguins.” ENDS
