During the American Civil War, Atlanta became a target of the Union and was surrendered by the Confederates following several battles. After evacuating civilians, Union General Sherman ordered the city to be burned to the ground, sparing churches and hospitals. This was part of a tactic to destroy the Confederates' resources.
