In April of 1861, the Battle of Fort Sumter in South Carolina started the American Civil War. Confederate Brig. Gen. Beauregard demanded the surrender of the Fort Sumter. When Maj. Anderson refused, the Confederate forces bombarded the fort, causing Anderson to surrender.
