A 3D view dated November 2003 of King Abdul Aziz Road, a 4 km long boulevard leading from the western town periphery to the central Haram Mosque with the Ka'Ba in Mecca. In view of the increasing amount of pilgrims, the secure access to the Haram has become one of the main targets of urban planning for the Saudi authorities. Architecture-Studio, a French agency, is the prizewinner of the competition for the development of the then-called Makkah Western Gateway in 2002. The new boulevard, with the Western Gate building complex (Left) and the new Prince Abdallah Mosque (Center) and a central rapid-transit bus terminal (Right), replaces and reinforces the existing major road connection between Makkah and Jeddah from where the majority of pilgrims enter the city to reach the holy center of the Muslim word. The project is commissioned by Millennium Development Company.
