The Tulsa Women's Clinic sits empty after the abortion ban in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on November 11, 2022. Some staff will relocate to locations in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Carbondale, Illinois, while other are unable to uproot their lives in this way. The Tulsa clinic averaged 300 to 500 abortions a month. With all clinics in the state now closed substantial burdens have been placed on women seeking this procedure: some will turn to mail-order medications or other clandestine methods to end a pregnancy or less safe methods, many will endure extensive travel to clinics in other states, and some will carry their pregnancies to term despite meaningful risks to their health and economic wellbeing. In May of this year, Oklahoma became the first state in the country to successfully outlaw nearly all abortions from the moment of conception on, even before the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade was overturned a month later. They have now been joined by at least 13 states as laws restricting the procedure take effect following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision and about a dozen more are likely to follow. This is a seismic shift for the United States, and in Oklahoma its impacts are rippling across an entire ecosystem of health workers, advocates, medical students, and uncountable women whose futures have been suddenly thrust into the unknown.
