A deserted road in central Oklahoma, on November 10, 2022. Now that the US Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, millions of Americans will soon find themselves in abortion deserts, meaning they will have to travel hundreds or thousands of miles to access the medical procedure. Roughly 33 million women of child-bearing age live in states with existing or expected abortion bans.
In May of this year, Oklahoma became the first state in the country to successfully outlaw nearly all abortions from the moment of conception on, even before the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade was overturned a month later. They have now been joined by at least 13 states as laws restricting the procedure take effect following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision and about a dozen more are likely to follow. This is a seismic shift for the United States, and in Oklahoma its impacts are rippling across an entire ecosystem of health workers, advocates, medical students, and uncountable women whose futures have been suddenly thrust into the unknown.
