20140517 Soweto, South Africa - A whoonga (nyaope) smoker near Soweto shows the white powder in the palm of his hand before mixing the drug with marijuana. Nyaope, a highly addictive drug cocktail is plaguing the townships in South Africa. It is popular among youngsters in the poor townships because it is cheap and highly addictive. The The powder-like substance contains a combination of low-grade heroin and anti-retroviral drugs (ARV). To keep the portions cheap it allegedly also contains a cocktail of milk powder, rat poison, bicarbonate of soda and pool cleaner. Use of the street drug has been spreading throughout the country since 2010, and was made illegal by the South African Drug Trafficking Act on March 28, 2014.
