Bill Broadbent at home Getting his 1780 barn conversion right was something the owner of this oak and flint Sussex hayloft barn on a south downs estate was well qualified to do. As a property developer who specialised in ancient buildings he knew that suburban details were not for him - a barn should look like barn specially when surrounded with open farmland on an estate in Sussex Downs. The building was untouched with cement tiles on the roof (later replaced with old Kent tiles) and floors made of dirt where cattle had been sheltering. Having drawn up the internal design and layout the owner assembled a team of local craftsmen, two of whom lived on site in a caravan to take the roof off, create an internal cavity and to dig out pits for concrete footings. Some of the original structural beams had been re-used from old ships while green oak was used for new purlins and reclaimed timber for the floors and doors. The gigantic shutters on the front are copies of the originals which were falling apart. All the doors and windows are triple glazed, powder coated oak frames while the cobblestone entranceway was paved with 400 year-old material brought from London. Inside it is obvious that this is a collectors home. Scientific instruments, textiles, rugs, taxidermy, boats/ships and 30's yacht hulls, antique display cases and chairs. The list goes on. There are 3 main bedrooms, a kitchen off the double height living room, a store and garage. It is a country house full of atmosphere and interest, every surface holding something intriguing to study and marvel at.
