This photo taken on April 25, 2024 shows a CEA employee (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) looking at a proton beam, as part of France's contribution to the construction of the European Spallation Source (ESS), an accelerator-based neutron source under construction in Lund, Sweden, at the CEA in Saclay, France, on April 25, 2024. The ESS, when completed, will be the world's most powerful accelerator-based neutron source to study the structure and behavior of matter at the atomic level. The Spallation process is a high-powered linear accelarator delivering protons on a tungsten target and as a result of the impact, the target spalls off neutrons which are then guided to neutron scattering instruments where they interact with samples of the materials to be studied.
