Bąkojady na antylopach

These antelopes are covered in oxpeckers as the birds peck out the insects in the mammals’ fur. The photos were taken by Thomas Retterath in the Savuti Marshes, Botswana.
The 60 year old said, “The antelopes were standing close to a watering hole, watching a nearby lion as they were concerned by the predators’ presence.”
“The birds took this opportunity to feed on the insects in the fur of the antelopes. It’s common to see this partnership, but I have never seen this many birds on one single animal. After a while, the antelopes were brave enough to drink from the watering hole.”

Pictured are antelope correct? What are the birds seen here? Are they common here?
Those are not fully grown Roan Antelopes. The birds are Red-billed Oxpeckers. Yes, they are common here.
Can you describe what is happening in these images? Is this a common interaction, a symbiotic relationship?
What draws the birds to the antelope?
The Roan were watching a lion under a shady bush. They were concerned of going to the waterhole for a drink with the predator in direct vicinity.
The birds feed on the insects in the fur of the antelope, it is a win-win situation.
This is a common interaction, but I think it is not common that there are so many birds on one single animal.
At least, I have never witnessed that.
Can you give us an insight into the moments leading up to this as well as directly after?
I was busy photographing birds on the waterhole, when these animals arrived.
After a while the antelopes were brave enough to drink from the waterhole.
How were you able to capture these images?
Being on the right time at the right place is the clue I think.
Is there any more information you would like us to include?
As I saw the scene I was reminded of a scene in the movie "Kevin in New York", when the lady in Central Park was covered with doves.
