The record has been etched with The Beatles signatures LONDON, ENGLAND AN INCREDIBLE signed Beatles record believed to be one of its kind is for sale for Ł72,976.98 on Ebay. Images show the Metal Mother Master Disc from 1964 signed by Ringo Star, George Hairrison, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. The disc is for sale by ES-Proaudio on Ebay and they are charging Ł72,976.98. The band's names have actually been etched into the disc itself. The purchaser will also get a letter of authentication with the disc from Sean W Davies stating he was the one who actually took the disc to The Beatles when they were recording in London to have it signed. There is also a typed letter from Dan Priest, a producer corroborating Sean's story about the disc being signed. “What we have here is the original blank 14" "Metal Mother Master Disc" from 1964,” says the listing. “Hand signed with a metal scribe by John, Paul, George and Ringo “...THE BEATLES...so that their signatures are actually "scratched" on the disc. “Unique and believed to be the only one in the world. The author's statement says: “My name is Sean W. Davies and I have been working in the sound recording and reproduction industry since 1959. “I now have my own acoustic research and development company providing services for many of the industry's leading studios and mastering facilities. “I am a member of the Audio Engineering Society and contributing author to the University of Surrey's Tonmeister Course textbook. “BEATLES SIGNATURES. Signed: In 1964 I was working at IBC Studios of 35, Portland Place, London W1. “The Beatles visited the studios from time to time and one day in a break from their recording of some music tracks for television I took a blank master lacquer disc to them and asked them if they would sign their names on the surface. “They duly signed their names, viz; John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. “The lacquer was then sent to a processing plant to produce the metal positive referred to above. No other metalwork is known to exist. “The positive may be used to yield stamper negatives from which copies could be pressed in vinyl in the same manner as a conventional 12" record, and these could be given a metal plating in the same way as the "Gold Discs" usually given as awards for record sales. “And below is the statement of today's owner of this memorabilia disc, Dan Priest. “My name is Dan Priest and I have been a recording engineer/producer with more than 40 years experience. “I owned Parkgatestudios, one of the principal residential recording studios in the UK and I have worked with many musicians, artistes from all over the world. This was and I'm happy to say, still is my life. “The Beatles Signature Disc that I have for sale, I bought from Sean Davies in 1990 and this is the story. “In 1964 The Beatles were recording a TV special called "Around The Beatles" at IBC recording and mastering Studios in London.
“Sean Davies, who was the resident mastering engineer at IBC asked John, Paul, George and Ringo if they would sign a blank metal lacquer disc with his engineer's metal scribe, this he would normally use to cut the record company's catalogue number into the surface of the disc. “The process of cutting or mastering a record is difficult to understand and it's a multi step process before you see the finished vinyl on your turntable. “The group would record their songs on magnetic tape in a recording studio. “The finished tape is then sent to a cutting/mastering room where a music recording lathe is used to cut an audio-signal-modulated groove into the surface of a special lacquer-coated blank 14" disc. “This process is known as "cutting" because the actual metal surface is cut by the lathe into the grooves that we recognise on our records. “In the vinyl record manufacturing process, a laquer/acetate master disc is cut and electroforming is used to make negative metal moulds from it; each mould, known as a stamper, can be used to press thousands of vinyl records that we know as LPs. They are the positives.
“The disc that I have for auction is the only known metal positive of that event and so bears witness to a unique historical event of the 4 guys that went on to be the biggest selling group of all time. “Unfortunately there are no photographs of this event, only the veracity and integrity of Sean, who is recognised throughout the music industry and his signed letter of authenticity as to what actually happened on that day in 1964. “Feel free to contact Mr. Priest directly.” ENDS
