A rare early sketch sent by a young Queen Elizabeth II to Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie is up for auction. Before Buckingham Palace, an extraordinary piece of history emerges as the childhood drawing by the then Princess Elizabeth, accompanied by a heartfelt letter from her mother, is set to go under the hammer at Boston-based RR Auction. The sketch, of Great Ormond Street Hospital, the children’s medical institution funded by royalties from Peter Pan, is thought to date back to the early 1930s when Elizabeth was four to six years old. The drawing is done in red crayon on the Duke of York monogrammed letterhead from 145 Piccadilly. The unsigned sketch portrays a proposed building at the Great Ormond Street Hospital, featuring a smoking chimney and a roof adorned with an array of windows. Experts speculate that the building in question may be either the Nurses Home, completed in 1937, or the Southwood Building, which opened in 1938. Accompanying the sketch is a four-page handwritten letter from the Duchess of York, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, signed "Elizabeth." The letter, also on 145 Piccadilly letterhead, is believed to have been dispatched from the family's London townhouse before King Edward VIII's abdication in 1936. The letter reads, "My dear Sir James, I am so sorry that I did not realize that you were making your speech tonight, I am hurriedly sending round a very poor house I fear. Elizabeth insisted on putting in a roof with lots of little windows for the nursery maids. Please Sir James will you not appeal in her name at all, as I have such difficulties over it, and I am not sure what it is that you wish to say." In a postscript, the Duchess requests, "If you can manage it - will you not let the Press photograph this." The letter also includes a mention of a meeting with "Cynthia," likely Lady Cynthia Asquith, Barrie's private secretary and friend. J.M. Barrie, the renowned Scottish novelist and playwright best known for creating Peter Pan, was a close friend of the Royal Family. The letter sheds light on Barrie's interactions with Princess Elizabeth and the Royal Family, showcasing their personal connection. Princess Margaret even declared Barrie as her greatest friend. The historical significance is further emphasized by Barrie's deep ties to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, the very institution for which he donated all of his Peter Pan rights in 1929. The hospital played a significant role in Barrie's life, inspiring the setting for the Darlings' family home in Peter Pan. The upcoming auction is expected to draw attention from collectors, historians, and royal enthusiasts eager to own this intimate piece of the young princess's artistic expression and the Duchess of York's correspondence with J.M. Barrie. Among other Royal lots are several signed Christmas cards. Notable pieces include a Princess Diana and King Charles III Signed Christmas Card (1987) sent to his aunt, Sophie of Greece and Denmark, and a Queen Elizabeth II ("Lilibet") and Prince Philip Signed Christmas Card (1952) addressed to Prince Philip's older sister, Sophie of Greece and Denmark. Another gem is a Princess Diana and King Charles III card from 1985. The auction will conclude on 10 January 2024.
