The Hubble Space Telescope is the only NASA spacecraft designed for on-orbit repair and maintenance. The Lockheed Martin Corporation was contracted to build the telescope. This May 1986 concept by Lockheed's Gordon Raney displays the Orbital Replacement Units, which include instruments, batteries, computers and other essential components in the equipment bays accessible through doors for easier removal and replacement. This illustration shows the immense complexity that made on-obit servicing of Hubble so challenging and illustrates why astronaut training in the Neutral Buoyancy Simulator at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, was so important to the successful repair and upgrades.
