Pope Benedict XVI (R) blesses a lamb during the lamb presentation ceremony in St. Urbano Chapel at the Vatican, 21 January 2008. Since the Middle Ages on St.Agnes feast two lambs are brought to the Pope to be solemnly blessed, before being shorn on Holy Thursday. From the wool is woven the pallium (a strip of white wool with black crosses woven into the fabric) which the Pope gives to a newly consecrated archbishop as a sign of his jurisdiction and his union with the pope. Man is unidentified. AFP PHOTO/ OSSERVATORE ROMANO
