?Big Bertha?, the giant German Naval gun which was used to bombard Paris in the late war, the type and location of which has always been a puzzle to the Allied Military authorities. The first shell from the ?Big Bertha? first fell in Paris in 1916 and was used without great effect in the following two years. The general direction from which the shell came of course was known at all times and it was then said that the gun was 75 miles away. It is highly probable that the Germans used the gun, not for the physical effect but for the effect on the morale of the French civilians. The source from which this photo was turned over to the French military cannot be revealed. Photo shows: The Big Bertha heavily camouflaged in firing position with the crew standing by. Note the carriage and mechanism is covered with double steel covering with heavy camouflage over this to prevent any possibility of the position being picked up by aerial photographers, May 11, 1923.
