This series of pictures was recently taken shortly after the collage of the polish revolt in Warsaw, on Sept. 15, 1944. During the fighting thousands and thousand of Warsaw inhabitants were forced to hide in the amts cellars and in the catacombs of the city. The suffering was considerable ? no food exept what was on hand was available. After the fighting ceased energency measures were taken by the German force to bring back law and order. One of the primary measures was the care of the civilians. Large quantities of food stuffs were distributed by the German troops in cooperation with the local polish relief authorities. Civilians first collected in special amts from where they were moved to less damaged districts of the city. The commanding general of German forces in Warsaw, SS Ober group leader Von Dem Bach. Personally supervised the relief measures and convinced himself of their being carried out thoroughly. Photo shows German soldier chatting with polish children on their way to their new homes. The children are carrying a sacred painting and a canary bird cage which their savaged from the ruins of their wrecked homes. (AP Photo)
