About 1,000 people gathered around the Columbus Statue at Columbus Circle, to pay tribute to the great navigator, on the 441st anniversary of his discovery of America, Oct. 12, 1933, New York. Wreaths were placed at the base of the statue, and addresses in tribute to Columbus were made. Mayor John O' Brien was one of those to speak. Central Park is in the background. (AP Photo)
