After marching his army more than 200 miles, fighting four battles within six days, General Grant moved on Vicksburg, Miss., on June 26, 1861 the river stronghold of the Confederacy. He tried to take the city by force, but failed after several costly attempts. He then laid siege to the defenders. It lasted 47 days, until the Confederate garrison, weakened by starvation, finally surrendered. (AP Photo)
