** FILE ** This 1968 aerial view shows one of the first oil wells in the Prudhoe Bay region, north of Anchorage, Alaska. More than a century before oil was discovered on Alaska's North Slope, seeps of the black gold were already noted by Inupiat Eskimos in other parts of the state, and archaeological findings suggest oil shale was even used for fuel. But it wasn't until the 1968 discovery at Prudhoe Bay at the northeast corner of the Slope that oil took on star status in the young state. (AP Photo/files)
