This engraving portrays the Battle of White Oak Swamp where the retreating Union Army of the Potomac was attacked on its way back from its march on Richmond near Glendale, or Frayser's Farm, Va. on June 30, 1862. Other names for this battle are: Charles City Crossroads, Nelson's Farm, Frayser's Farm, New Market Road and Riddell's Shop. This is the fifth of the Seven Days' Battle which saved Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, and killed Union hopes of a quick end to the Civil War. (AP Photo)
